Welcome to M.Rodwell
I’m so glad you’re here to explore my art journey. Read on to discover how I became an artist and the path I’ve followed over the past 15 years.
Painted by hand. Inspired by London.
ABOUT:
I’m Magnus Rodwell, a self-taught impressionist artist. I didn’t come into art through a traditional path — it came from a period in life where everything suddenly changed direction. During a difficult period after being made redundant, I started picking up brushes and drawing the places around me, almost as a way of making sense of everything. That’s where Bermondsey really became the focus of my work.
While I was applying for jobs and figuring things out, I began sketching and painting the streets I walked every day. Bermondsey especially inspired me — the hidden corners, the old buildings, the busy high streets, and the quiet moments in between. It slowly turned into a body of work that captured the feeling of the area rather than just what it looked like.
Before becoming an artist, I spent around fifteen years working in finance as a stockbroker. I worked in different roles, including settlement operations and corporate actions. After that, I moved into international language schools, working as an educator and later as a Director of Studies. Those years taught me a lot about people, communication, and stories — which probably explains why my art is so focused on human connection now.
I studied Business Administration at Winchester University and graduated with honours, and later completed my CELTA teaching qualification as part of that career change.
Over time, my work started to grow beyond Bermondsey. I’ve exhibited across London, both on my own and alongside other artists. I was also really honoured to receive recognition from the Southwark Business Excellence Awards for Cultural Commitment, which meant a lot because it reflected the work I’ve been doing within the community.
I still live and work in Bermondsey, and I continue to paint London as I experience it — now also exploring places like Paddington and Marylebone High Street making limited edition prints. What draws me in is always the same: the energy of the streets, the architecture, and the small stories happening everywhere you look.
For me, it’s never just about painting buildings or streets. It’s about people’s memories of those places — where they lived, worked, fell in love, or simply spent time. That’s what I try to capture in every piece of impressionist London artwork I create.

The artist's vibrant strokes immortalize the idyllic haven of St Saviours Wharf on canvas. Now available as a limited Edition print. Bursting with a symphony of colours, the artwork captures the very essence of the location's beauty. Amidst a world where summer clouds create gentle shadows on cerulean skies, buildings' reflections dance on the water's surface in an enchanting interplay.
St. Saviour's Dock, originating from Bermondsey Abbey monks in the 13th century, emerged from the Neckinger inlet's expansion. Named after the abbey's patron, it was initially a water mill for local supply after the dissolution of monasteries. Transforming into England's first water-powered gunpowder factory, it later pioneered straw-based paper production. Dickens' era saw the site housing lead mills.

Giclee London Print | Originally Painted with Acrylic on Canvas.
The towering chimney stack of Hartley's Jam factory dominates this picturesque view, showcasing Webber Street and Tower Bridge Road. Skilfully painted with acrylic on canvas board, this distinctive artwork delves into the rustic allure of Bermondsey. On the far left "City Space" development comes into view, and further into the distance a bustling laundrette hard at work. At the intersection with Tower Bridge Road, two cyclists patiently await the changing traffic lights while a London cabbie gracefully manoeuvres past.
Delving into the history of Hartley’s Jam factory, it was established in 1901 on the grounds of a former tannery and linoleum factory. Fruits were meticulously sourced from the orchards of Kent and transported via train to the Bricklayers Arms rail depot on Pages Walk. Hartley's maintained their own Thames-side wharf, where sugar from the Tate works in Silvertown arrived for processing. The factory premises have since been converted into modern apartment blocks.
Our array of vibrant prints is a splendid choice for an eye-catching feature wall that beautifully encapsulates the essence of London life. Consider creating a captivating collage on your walls for an art gallery ambiance.

Giclee Colourful Art Reproduction | Makes for Memorable Gifts
This exquisite acrylic painting of Blackheath captures Tranquil Vale and has been made into limited edition prints. In this captivating artwork, a cyclist wearing a vibrant yellow top commands the foreground, drawing your attention with a burst of colour and energy.
As your gaze moves beyond the cyclist, the background unveils the charming Blackheath. It encapsulates the quaint local bookshop, a cosy café, and All Saints Church, crowned by its majestic spire. A bus makes a brief stop, gathering passengers, while a row of neatly parked cars and bicycles patiently await their owners, ticking away the moments until their parking tickets expire.
Beyond its scenic allure, Blackheath boasts a rich history that often goes unnoticed. It served as a rallying point for two pivotal uprisings in English history: Wat Tyler's Peasants' Revolt of 1381 and Jack Cade's Kentish rebellion in 1450, commemorated by road names on the heath's western side. The echoes of rebellion lingered as Cornish rebels, after camping at Blackheath, met their fate at the Battle of Deptford Bridge, also known as the Battle of Blackheath, on 17 June 1497.
Our collection offers a diverse array of London-inspired designs in both vivid colour prints and intricate pencil drawings. Elevate your surroundings with our versatile selection, where you can mix and match to create a harmonious atmosphere that resonates with the timeless charm of Blackheath and the vibrant spirit of London.
