A covering of snow transforms Bermondsey Street in South London into a wonderfully atmospheric winter scene.

Based on my original acrylic painting, this limited edition print captures one of South London’s best-loved independent high streets on a cold, snowy day. In the distance stands St Mary Magdalen Church, one of Bermondsey Street’s most recognisable landmarks, drawing the eye along the street.

In the foreground, the distinctive Fuckoffee coffee shop sign adds a familiar piece of modern Bermondsey character. People make their way carefully along the snowy pavements, while a lone cyclist has decided that the slippery road is better tackled on foot. Nearby, a London taxi has pulled over, adding another small moment of everyday London life to the scene.

Bermondsey Street has a fascinating history. In the early 19th century, St Mary Magdalen Church and its churchyard became associated with concerns over grave robbing and body snatching. These fears led to the construction of the Bermondsey Watch House in 1821, which can still be found further along the street today.

It is this combination of old and new London that I love capturing in my work — historic architecture alongside cafés, pedestrians, cyclists and those ordinary moments that give a street its personality.
