Steeped in historical significance, this garden, along with its adjacent cottages, was constructed in 1886, a testament to the tireless campaigning and fundraising of social reformer Octavia Hill (1838-1912). Octavia Hill, one of the founding members of The National Trust, envisioned Red Cross Garden as a flagship project to underscore the vital importance of improving housing conditions and granting access to green spaces for the less fortunate.

Delving into the history of Hartley’s Jam factory, it was established in 1901 on the grounds of a former tannery and linoleum factory. Fruits were meticulously sourced from the orchards of Kent and transported via train to the Bricklayers Arms rail depot on Pages Walk. Hartley's maintained their own Thames-side wharf, where sugar from the Tate works in Silvertown arrived for processing. The factory premises have since been converted into modern apartment blocks.
