Limehouse Basin is one of those London locations that has stayed in my memory for years. Long before I thought about painting it, I would regularly pass the marina on the DLR, travelling to and from work in the London Docklands.

From around 1999 to 2011, it became a familiar part of my journey. In the early morning I would see the light falling across the water as I made my way into the office, while in the evening it was a welcome sight as I headed home. I can still remember sitting on the DLR, looking down towards the boats and wondering what lay beyond the marina that I could only glimpse from the train.

Years later, I finally went back to explore Limehouse Basin properly — this time not in a suit heading to work, but as an artist looking for a London scene to paint.

Limehouse Basin – London Marina

For some time, I’ve admired Limehouse Basin and wanted to capture it in paint. This colourful composition looks across the marina towards Berglen Court and Limehouse DLR station, bringing together the boats, architecture and unmistakable character of London’s Docklands.

On a bright summer’s day, boats sit peacefully moored in the marina while a DLR train passes along the tracks in the distance. I particularly love the almost cinematic quality of this view — the stillness of the water and boats contrasting with the movement of the railway, surrounded by the striking architecture and countless windows overlooking the basin.

Limehouse also holds personal memories for me. During my years working in finance, I would regularly pass through the area on my way to the Docklands. I remember looking out towards Limehouse Basin and admiring the view, so finally painting it feels like capturing a little piece of my own London history.

And where does the name Limehouse come from? The area has a remarkably long history, with its name linked to the lime kilns associated with local riverside potteries and references to “Les Lymhostes” dating back to the 14th century.

Painting Limehouse Basin

What immediately attracted me was the wonderful mixture of water, architecture and movement.

The marina is filled with an eclectic collection of boats, from traditional canal boats and sailing boats to rather grander motor yachts, all sitting alongside one another. Their different shapes and colours, combined with the reflections dancing across the water, create an almost mesmerising view.

In my painting, I wanted to capture that peacefulness while also including something that had always been part of my own memories of Limehouse — the DLR.

Look into the distance and you'll see a DLR train passing behind the marina. For me, it connects the painting directly with all those journeys I made years ago. The boats may be peacefully moored in the foreground, but London continues moving behind them.

A London View Filled with Memories

One of the remarkable things about returning to Limehouse Basin is how familiar it still feels. The marina remains beautifully maintained, and many of the views that stayed with me from my commuting days are still recognisable today.

That is ultimately what my Limehouse Basin artwork is about — not simply painting a marina, but capturing the memories we associate with a particular place.

Perhaps you once lived in Limehouse, walked around the marina with friends or family, travelled past it every day on the DLR, or were fortunate enough to keep a boat here. Maybe your memories are of setting off along London's waterways or simply stopping beside the water and enjoying this surprisingly peaceful corner of the capital.

This acrylic painting captures Saint Saviour's Dock, looking inland toward Jamaica Road. The dock is lined with notable warehouse apartments, including New Concordia Wharf, St Saviour's Wharf, Vogans Mill, Tea Trade Wharf, Cinnamon Wharf, Conran Building, Saffron Wharf, and St Andrews Wharf.

This very location inspired Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist, where the infamous character Bill Sykes is said to reside in one of these warehouses. During Dickens' time, this neighbourhood was vastly different from today, requiring a sharp mind and caution.
