‘Bermondsey is more than simply a place I paint. It is my home.’
I moved to Bermondsey in 1997 and over the years I’ve watched the area constantly evolve while still holding onto its strong sense of identity and community. What was once known for warehouses, tanneries, dockyards and working industry has gradually transformed into one of London’s most creative and characterful neighbourhoods. Yet despite all the change, Bermondsey still feels grounded in its history and the people who give the area its spirit.
Living and working here as an artist has allowed me to experience Bermondsey beyond the surface. Through painting and drawing the streets over many years, I’ve come to know the independent shop owners, local businesses, cafés, galleries and residents that make the area feel so welcoming. Whether walking down Bermondsey Street, passing Tower Bridge, exploring the riverside near Shad Thames or cycling through the quieter side streets, there is always something that catches my attention and makes me stop to look again.
When I search for scenes to paint, I’m always looking for atmosphere, movement and architecture that tells a story. Sometimes it’s an old warehouse building standing proudly amongst modern apartments. Sometimes it’s the way the light falls on a Victorian façade, the energy of people gathering outside cafés or simply a quiet street that holds memories for thousands of people who walk past it every day without fully realising its importance………….

Delving into the history of Hartley’s Jam factory, it was established in 1901 on the grounds of a former tannery and linoleum factory. Fruits were meticulously sourced from the orchards of Kent and transported via train to the Bricklayers Arms rail depot on Pages Walk. Hartley's maintained their own Thames-side wharf, where sugar from the Tate works in Silvertown arrived for processing. The factory premises have since been converted into modern apartment blocks.

Bermondsey has a cinematic quality that continually inspires my artwork. I often include cyclists, pedestrians and moments of everyday London life because I want the viewer to feel emotionally drawn into the scene rather than simply observing a building. For me, London art should feel alive. It should remind people of moments they’ve experienced themselves — where they worked, walked, met friends, fell in love or built a life.
Many of the buildings and streets I paint carry stories hidden beneath the surface. One example is the famous “Time and Talents” building on Bermondsey Street. For years I admired the architecture and passed it regularly without fully knowing its history. Later I discovered its important role supporting literacy, community work and helping local people throughout Bermondsey’s past. Experiences like this constantly remind me that London’s streets quietly hold layers of memory and meaning that we often only discover afterwards.
That emotional connection is what I hope people feel when they bring one of my Bermondsey art prints or original London paintings into their home.
